The Buddhist Side

I have been one of the leading lights in the development of what has been called 'East-West psychology' in the UK . A member of the faculty of the Sharpham College for Buddhist Studies in Devon for several years, I have written several books and papers exploring the coming-together of spiritual - principally Buddhist - wisdom and contemporary cognitive neuroscience. These include:

  • 'Nirvana and neuroscience', in DK Nariyal (ed), Buddha Mind: Developing Spiritual Foundations of Psychology Routledge Curzon Press 2005
  • 'Proximal spirituality: why the brains of angels are different from ours', in David Lorimer (ed), Science, Consciousness and Ultimate Reality (Imprint Academic 2004)
  • Wholly Human: Eastern and Western Visions of the Self and Its Perfection (Routledge and Kegan Paul 1981)
  • Beyond Therapy: The Impact of Eastern Religions on Psychological Theory and Practice (editor, Prism Press 1996)
  • Noises from the Darkroom: On The Science and the Mystery of the Mind (HarperCollins 1994)
  • The Psychology of Awakening (co-editor, Rider, UK and Weiser, USA , 1999)
